Renovating our home office, I found this picture taken by my wife in 1994 (gotta love those outsized shorts - I was styling...). It is my favorite golf picture of all time because of the memory of the event that made the picture happen:
I had won a sales contest which was an all-expense paid trip to Hawaii. My wife Liz planned the whole trip and although she's not a player she made sure that I got to play some golf. Kauai Lagoons, Turtle Bay, and then on the last day we made it to Kapalua.
We got to Maui late morning and we didn't have a reserved tee time but they paired us with a couple from Toronto, Canada whose other couple had bailed on them. I rented clubs - brand new Ping irons and woods, the new copper heads - and we headed out to play the Plantation course.
Liz drove the cart, and we had a fun front nine. At the turn, the Toronto couple politely excused themselves as they had a plane to catch. Liz and I had the back nine literally to ourselves. It was amazing.
We had to play the back nine pretty fast if we wanted to finish as it was getting late in the afternoon and the sun would be going down soon.
The picture to the right is a miracle because it was much darker. I was determined to finish but I really couldn't see where I was hitting the ball. I get to the famous 18th hole that was playing 663 yards. I teed off with a three iron to keep it straight and findable. Then a second three iron to get me to a reasonable approach. Then a third three iron put me about 10 yards short of the green.
As you can see in the picture I got the ball up, and it landed soft with a release to about two feet from the hole. As the sun fell below the horizon I putted for a par.
I cherish the memory of that round above all others as it cemented my love for the game and set the course for many more great memories, Jeroma|Golf is the result of this adventure, and I want to help golfers create their own great memories through my access to great golf locations and experiences.
